Shared Approach. Consistent Practice. Stronger Numeracy.
A District Wide Foundation for Mathematical Success

Penny Drop Teaching’s Number Sense Routine provide a common, research-based, practical framework for strengthening foundational numeracy K-5 across an entire district.

Our work is grounded in current research on mathematical mindsets and effective mathematics education. Drawing on leading thinkers such as Jo Boaler, Christina Tondevold, John A. Van de Walle, and First Steps in Math, we turn research into practical, easy-to-implement resources that support meaningful mathematics learning.

Improving numeracy requires more than individual teacher taking initiative.
It requires a coordinated, consistent approach.
When teachers share a common approach, students benefit from familiar routines, consistent mathematical language and a clear progression of learning. Teachers have a shared reference point for discussing student understanding, identifying learning gaps and planning next steps.
The Number Sense Routine is aligned with the BC Curriculum and covers the following skills:

-
Reading, writing, and saying numbers.
-
Ordering numbers.
-
Identifying digit values
-
Expanded form.
-
Counting on and counting back.
-
Giving real-life examples.
-
Using number paths and number lines.
-
Creating equations.
-
Drawing to represent or show the value of a number.
The Number Sense routine contains 24 booklets from level K to 5. Even with a complex class, teachers can easily differentiate and have each student work at their “just right” level. All students develop the foundational understanding needed for future learning. Consistent layouts and familiar instructions support independence. A common program across grades and schools means that teachers maintain common learning goals.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: TURNING EVIDENCE INTO IMPROVEMENT
Our booklets are used in a 20-30 minute routine (depending on the size of the class) where students complete one page of a booklet at a "just-right" level. Teachers circulate in the class,
giving formative feedback to their students.
Students receive immediate feedback on their work, which boosts their confidence
and improves their skills. Teachers use these daily formative sessions to inform their teaching.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: MEASURING SUCCESS
Each level has a summative assessment that is given at the end of the booklet.
Teachers have accurate, current data for reporting.
The Number Sense Resource Package
